Meet the Mushroom

Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is high in antioxidants and plant compounds that may benefit health. It often resembles a dark clump of dirt but has bright orange tissue beneath its exterior. While the exact nutritional composition of chaga mushrooms is unclear, this fungus is high in antioxidants and several beneficial plant compounds such as: triterpenoids, melanins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavans.

Chaga spores occur naturally in a large part of the Northern hemisphere, including European boreal forests. Chaga spores can only infect trees that were previously damaged, for example by the wind, or frostbite.

The fungus “spreads throughout heartwood, but does not penetrate the sapwood, except for the small portion around the sterile conk“. The infection “will continue living inside a host tree for 10~80+ years”. (Source Jankovsky et al. 2008).

The Chaga fungus has a natural tendency to have long longevity and peacefully coexists with its host, just like the perfect couple. It does not seem to kill or weaken its host tree, unlike other parasitic species that have a shorter life cycle and usually kill their host organism.

Know the Risks

Chaga mushrooms are naturally rich with many vital minerals and health benefits, but like any food is not without certain risks. Chaga lowers blood sugar and can inhibit platelet aggregation within the bloodstream. If you take insulin, blood-sugar-lowering medicines, anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, or are anemic, consider the following before sipping some chaga:

-Continue to take all prescribed medications — chaga is not a substitute for traditional medication.

-Talk with your doctor about your medications. As with other drugs and supplements, chaga may alter the effectiveness of various medications.

-Document any side effects from chaga use. Though rare, chaga could trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Trouble breathing, changes in heart rate, and loss of consciousness are medical emergencies.

-Avoid other herbal supplements while taking chaga unless a doctor advises otherwise.
